MARK WALDREP, PH.D.
ce_pro
AIX Records Founder and Chief Engineer Mark Waldrep Talks with Robert Harley about the Future of High-Resolution Downloads
Robert Harley: What are AIX Records’ plans for delivering high-resolution downloads?

Mark Waldrep: When DVD first came around, I was a believer in high-resolution PCM and had hoped, as others did, that DVD-Audio was going to be a viable marketplace format. It didn’t turn out that way, for various reasons. The SACD format was for me a nonstarter because it was just a grown-up CD. It would do potentially better-than-CD quality, but it didn’t have the ability to do all of the other things that I wanted to put on a disc—the video, the interactivity, the PDF files of a guitar lesson, the multiple camera angles—all that other stuff,—even without getting into the argument of whether it sounds as good.

But if the physical format goes away, does high-resolution audio go away? I would contend, no, it doesn’t.

I can’t, and still don’t, produce CD versions of our stuff. The experience of high-resolution, surround music is so much more engaging to me, but the question is, how do you get it to people? Three years ago Intel found out that AIX records Records had won a the CEA Demmy award for "Best High Resolution, 5.1 Surround Music Track" and contacted me to ask if they could use the music on their media server regarding the possibility of using some of our content in conjunction with media servers. I didn’t really know much about media servers at the time. But I discovered the possibilities capabilities for a PC to storing store and presenting playback very high-quality 96kHz, 24-bit PCM files and had an “ah-ha!” moment. This could become a platform where all the recordings I’ve made could become available to listeners—like an iTunes for adults. It will take more time to download, but bandwidth is opening up all the time. Instead of a person at the front desk shipping out boxes, and me worrying about formats, I can produce the projects I want to do and they’ll get to people through the music-server model.

I hooked up worked very closely with Intel’s Digital Home Division and we presented at a number of trade shows. We’d play a file off a demonstrate some of our real high-resolution, surround music files with accompanying HD Video from a media server and people flipped out—they liked it a lot. The next step was to build a website so that people in Thailand or South Africa or wherever people were interested in this music could download the files.

We give consumers choices at our site (www.itrax.com). For example, each audio track is available in 21 different permutations. There are seven different encode flavors, starting with from a 192 kbps MP3 file, (including a 5.1-channel surround versions), through Dolby Digital, through DTS, through Windows Media Professional, through Windows Media Lossless, through FLAC, on up to 96 kHz/24 24-bit PCMs, and for each one of those, the consumer can choose to have it in stereo, an audience 5.1-channel perspective, or from the stage 5.1-channel perspective. [AIX DVD-A/V titles offer selectable "audience" and "stage" mixes, indicating the spatial perspective the listener hears.— RH]

In the future we will also be adding 18 different versions of this track, with standard-definition video, 720p and 1080p HD video, with whatever kind of audio mix and whatever kind of audio format you want. It becomes basically a grid, a matrix, . where, unlikeUnlike eMusic or iTunes, who each has a million tracks to choose from, there is somewhere in the area of a thousand tracks that we’ve accumulated iTrax.com customers will be able to select from around a thousand high-resolution tracks. I’m also talking with other labels to put real, high-definition tracks in these various configurations and let people buy the track one, two, or three or four times, the same track, because they have different uses—they want it for their portable iPod, or to burn onto DTS CD they can take into their car. Someone else might have a media server with lots of storage and they’ll take a 96 kHz/24 bit PCM surround file.

RH: Is the music priced by file size?

MW: Yes, it’s based on file size and the time it takes to download. I haven’t finalized the prices, but the span will be anything from about 79 cents up to about $3 a track.

RH: How do you see the download market evolving over the next five years?

MW: I think it’s going to be huge, for those people who care about audio quality and multichannel delivery. At a recent show, an executive from Comcast demonstrated the difference between DSL speeds and their new technology. The DSL connection took 50 minutes to download a 300MB file and with the new system it took eight seconds. The writing is on the wall.

There will be two kinds of media delivery. There will be collectors’ Collectors’ editionsEditions, like what we done with Ernest Ranglin, and with some of the John Gorka and Albert Lee projects. The signed and numbered package includes a deluxe book and four sides on two discs for people who are fans, that want the physicality, that want to be able to walk over to the shelves and pull something ourout. These are $50 retail products—people get their money’s worth with lots of bonus features.

And then there are the people around the world who don’t want to wait for shipping and are interested in the music as a download. We pipe the files to them overnight to their media server and then they can do anything they want with them—make a copy to a physical media (depending on the format), play it in another room, or in the car. That’s going to become a much bigger part of the market ultimately as bandwidth increases and more content becomes available that way. I have friends who watch TV only through their Internet connection.

RH: Will downloads replace packaged media?

MW: I do believe that, yes. What choice do small companies like mine, Chesky, Telarc, and Classic Records have? It’s cost prohibitive to get into the HD DVD or Blu-Ray just to carry audio. Now, I’m a perfect customer for the new formats because I have shot in hi-def video the last 25 projects that we’ve done. But putting out a disc doesn’t make sense—you’ve , got to manufacture 5,000 of them at $2.50 a disc, not to mention the authoring cost, which can range anywhere from 5 to 25 thousand dollars. For a guy whocompany that doesn’t regularly sells fewer more than 5,000 copies of each one of our records, the numbers just don’t add up. It’s just not economically feasible to do this, especially since we’ve got a format war. The solution is that people will use ever more powerful media servers.

RH: Don’t we need a significantly larger installed base of music servers?

MW: I think that’s coming. Every computer, whether it’s a Mac or PC, potentially becomes the media server. You can use send the data through a USB or Ethernet connection, or wirelessly, from the computer to your media room.

RH: The challenge seems to be getting the content from your PC to your hi-fi system, both technically and the consumer’s resistance to having to boot up a computer to listen to music.

MW: I used to say that very thing, but I’m not so convinced any more. Intel and Microsoft are working on technologies to bridge the gap between the computer and the listening environment. It’s getting to be a pretty seamless transfer—look at Apple TV or the Slim Devices’ Transporter box. I think the ease-of-use factor is going to be critical. RH: The younger generation views the computer in the same way we once thought of the hi-fi system—the device for playing music.

MW: Absolutely. My kids, who are in their late teens and early 20s, don’t watch TV. Planet Earth is a download onto the Mac portable and they watch it sitting in the living room or in their own bedrooms. I believe very strongly that we’re on the threshold of a powerful transition. The consumer-electronics companies see the Microsoft and Intel juggernaut coming their way, and they want to make friends with it by incorporating media-server technology into devices that wear a consumer-electronics front panel.

It’s not there yet, but it is coming. There’s a dedicated group of people who are frustrated that they cannot find high-definition music, but I’m here to tell them that high-resolution downloads is the way.

ONLINE INTERVIEWS

  • "I worry about sound quality and old ways of the industry. Up-sampled CDs, play-everything consumer machines and lawyers killed the DVDA. The tragic consequence was much like humanity creating the first wheel and breaking it apart so it would not roll away. Many titles in vaults have sonic losses from compression and sampling that can’t be recovered. Yet, surely, there will be re-issues even though high resolution will not improve them. Some reviewers use analyzers to spot these marketed imposters."

Keith O. Johnson, Chief Engineer and Technical Director, Reference Recordings

  • "It's good to know there are still some labels left dedicated to making high quality surround recordings. I applaud you for educating people about what is and isn't HD (analog tape/vinyl being an example that isn't HD)."

Dr. Sean E. Olive / Director of Acoustic Research/Corporate R&D.
